Behaviours: Why “Leading by Example” Isn’t Enough

Beyond Role Modelling
Beyond Role Modelling

Many organizations believe that if leaders simply role model company values, the rest of the workforce will follow suit. While role modelling is vital, it is only one-third of the equation. If you want to bridge the gap between “Values” and “Reality,” leadership requires three distinct, active responsibilities:

1. The Architect: Defining the “How”

A value like “Integrity” or “Collaboration” is open to interpretation. Your first job is to sit with your team and translate those lofty words into daily actions.

  • What does this behaviour look like in a high-pressure meeting? * What behaviours are strictly not tolerated? Without these conversations, you’re asking people to find a destination without a map.

2. The Mirror: Living the Standard

This is the role modelling we all know. You are the loudest symbol in the room. If you demand “Social Effectiveness” but manage through silos or exclusion, you create negative symbolism. Your “walk” must match your “talk” to earn the right to lead the next step.

3. The Coach: Correcting and Recognizing

Behavioural standards are meaningless without accountability. This is where most leaders falter. You must have the courage to:

  • Constructively Correct: Address “brilliant jerks” or behaviours that undermine the team.
  • Positively Reinforce: Use recognition to “catch people doing it right.”

The Teamwork Trap: Why Individual Rewards Kill Collaboration

I often hear leaders complain: “My employees still behave like individuals, not a team!” My response is always the same: Look at what you are rewarding. If your performance reviews and bonuses are based solely on individual output, your people will naturally focus on their own lane. If you want “Teamwork” to be a lived behaviour, you must reward the Team over the Individual. You cannot incentivize competition and then wonder why you lack collaboration.

How I Help Bridge the Gap

I partner with organizations that are tired of the values-reality gap. I help you operationalize these three leadership functions by providing the structural support they require:

  • I specialize in Behavioural Mapping, distilling high-level corporate values into tangible, measurable behaviours specific to your team’s unique dynamic.
  • Through targeted Leadership Coaching, I help executives identify their behavioural blind spots, ensuring that their actions are perfectly aligned with the standards they set.
  • I guide you in Overhauling Performance Management, mapping these behaviours directly to rating scales and reward systems. This provides the objective framework necessary for leaders to coach effectively and reward true teamwork over solo efforts.
